CAREER OPPORTUNITY
The Fair Trading Commission is a regulatory agency which was established by the Fair Trading Commission Act to enforce, inter alia, the Fair Trading Commission Act, the Utilities Regulation Act, the Fair Competition Act and the Consumer Protection Act.
The Fair Trading Commission is seeking to recruit an individual to fill the position of General Legal Counsel.
The General Legal Counsel will be responsible for advising the Commission on the administration and enforcement of legislation administered by the Commission and general legal matters.
This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer.
The General Legal Counsel will be required to:
- Administer and enforce legislation pertaining to utility regulation, fair competition and consumer protection;
- Advise the Commission panels on the determination of utility regulation matters;
- Evaluate and analyse developments within relevant sectors in order to inform on any revisions of regulatory practices;
- Provide advice regarding the review and amendment of legislation enforced by the Commission;
- Ensure the accurate interpretation of the Fair Trading Commission Act and all other legislation to be enforced by the Commission; and
- Ensure that decisions, reports or other documentation issued by the Commission is legally sound.
Required Qualifications:
- Be an Attorney-at-Law of not less than seven years’ standing with experience in litigation; and
Hold a Master of Laws (LLM) qualification from a recognised institution.
Other Requirements:
- Be familiar with regulatory policies and procedures and have knowledge of administrative law;
- Have proven advocacy skills;
- Have the ability to prepare clear, sound and informative
reports;
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team; and
- Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills and a track record for high quality output.
Previous experience gained through association with an enforcement or regulatory agency, together with a good working knowledge of utilities regulation, consumer protection or fair competition laws, would be an asset.
